OUTREACH ACTIVITIES OF MACN-INDIA
13th June 2024
MACN-India Team had, at the invitation of TeeKay (TK) Shipping Company (MACN member), attended the former’s Officers Conference - 2024 held at Mumbai. This event was attended by 40 serving Masters, Chief Engineers and other officers of various ranks of the company. Besides, 6 senior management functionaries of TK from Mumbai and Singapore, including its Managing Director- India, too were present then. Team MACN-India was able to showcase MACN, overall, and its India operations & impactful outcomes, specifically, through a detailed presentation. This session, held across 75 minutes, was very engaging & interactive and was received very well.

Team MACN-India had presented to and interacted with, virtually, Josefine Pallesen, Counsellor (Maritime), Embassy of Denmark to India, in New Delhi, as well as Jan F. and Elise of the Maritime Operations Division and Maritime Policy Division of the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) based in Denmark. This meeting was done with a view to apprise the DMA of the work of MACN in India and impactful outcomes thereof. This was an opportunity to explore potential areas of collaboration and funding between MACN and DMA contextual to India.

Team MACN-India had presented to and interacted with, in-person, Mr. Sankar Balasubramanian, Vice-President (Compliance), Siemens-India at his office in Mumbai. This one-hour meeting was the 5th of its kind done on a quarterly basis with a view to fully apprise Siemens as the funder of the work of MACN in India about the latter’s work profile and impactful outcomes thereof in India.

The Senior Adviser, MACN-India had, on the invitation of the Board of Directors of FOSMA, attended an evening reception hosted by the latter at Chennai. The former had, at this program, met and interacted with the said Board Members as well as several other invitee senior maritime professionals from Chennai. The said Board had in their address in the event warmly acknowledged the contributions and value-added services of MACN in India. The other invitee stakeholders had also endorsed the same.

The Chennai (southern region) based maritime and logistics industry stakeholders' interaction meet with the MACN-India Advisory Committee (led by its Chairman) and the MACN-India Team was held at the Chennai Port Authority premises for 2 hours. It was also attended by the Chairman & other senior officers of the Chennai Port Authority and 72 other stakeholders. Team MACN-India had made a detailed presentation about MACN, overall, and its India operations in particular. This meeting was very productive in terms of information dissemination and sensitization about the MACN, as well as by way of collective action engagement. This program was received and resonated very well with the attendees.

Team MACN-India had visited the HIMT (Hindustan Institute of Maritime Training) at Chennai and had delivered an in-person presentation about MACN and its activities in India to 165 attendees comprising the Director, faculty members and serving officer mariners (both nautical and engine sides) undergoing post-sea competency courses at the Institute which is approved by the DG Shipping, GoI.

The Senior Adviser, MACN-India had, on the invitation of the Maritime Union of India (MUI) attended, as Guest of Honour, the ‘IMO International Day for Women in Maritime’ organized by the MUI in Mumbai and in the course of his address therein spelt out the role and value-added contribution of MACN-India in the maritime sector in the country.

He had then met and interacted with both Mr. Eric Garcetti and Mr. Mike Hankey, US Ambassador to India at New Delhi and US Consul General at Mumbai, respectively.

Team MACN-India had met Mr. A .B . Dutta, Secretary, IOMOU (Indian Ocean Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control and Flag State Inspections) at his office in Goa. Discussions were held and arrangements were made for sharing information about incidents of corruptions in the areas of PSC and FSI, as and when they arise, potentially, in the Indian context, going forward.

The Kolkata (eastern region) based maritime and logistics industry stakeholders' interaction meet with the MACN-India Steering Committee (led by its Chairman) and the MACN-India Team was held at the Kolkata Port premises for 2 hours. It was also attended by the Chairman & other senior officers of the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Kolkata Port Authority and 100 other stakeholders. Team MACN-India had made a detailed presentation about MACN, overall, and its India operations in particular. The Senior Adviser, MACN-India had, on the invitation of the Commodore Superintendent of the Sea Cadet Corps, Mumbai, attended the 58th Commissioning Anniversary of the Training Ship Jawahar of the Sea Cadet Corps. In this program, he had met and interacted with a large number of key stakeholders, including senior officers of the Indian Navy. He had also discussed with them matters pertaining to the MACN.

Saxena, a very distinguished maritime educationist and trainer, now associated with NMIS ( Narottam Morarjee Institute of Shipping) had reached out and spoken to the Senior Adviser, MACN-India, on behalf of the IMU (Indian Maritime University). The former had requested the latter to provide a brief overview of MACN for consideration for suitable incorporation into the syllabus of the proposed two years MBA program (virtual) for CoC holders, which is likely to be rolled out from the forthcoming academic year 2024-2025 by the IMU. The Senior Adviser, has since mailed the requisite material to the former, with a copy to the Vice-Chancellor, IMU, on 7th January 2024

The Senior Adviser, MACN-India, had personally met and briefed the Chairman, MACN-India Steering Committee about a potential funding offer from an international organisation for the various programs and projects of MACN in India. The former then met the CEO, INSA with a request, while briefing him updates on the activities and works of MACN in India, as also about the said international funding opportunity, to consider enabling MACN-India to make a formal presentation to the Board of Directors of INSA in their next meeting slated to be held at Mumbai on 24th January 2024, followed by interactions with them. The Senior Adviser subsequently also met the CMD, Shipping Corporation of India to brief him about the different projects and programs of MACN-India, further requesting him to provide an opportunity to MACN-India to showcase its works to and interact with the said Board of INSA

The MACN-India Team had made a presentation to and interacted, virtually, with the senior management team, officials, masters and crew members of U-Ming Marine Transport Corporation, numbering around 120 people, during their semi-annual crew conference held at Xiamen, China. This opportunity was also used to showcase the proactive support and assistance provided by MACN-India during the entire recent port call of U-Ming’s vessel ‘Cemtex Dominance’ at Mundra port in Gujarat, as part of a successful pilot collaboration between U-Ming and MACN-India.

The MD of GAC-India had invited the Senior Adviser (India) to the MACN as a Guest of Honour for this function held at Mumbai. The MACN India Team had in an in-person meeting, made a presentation to and engaged in interactions with 5 senior functionaries of APSEZ (Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone), at Mumbai, on the request of APSEZ in the context of their willingness to consider applying for membership of MACN from India.. This was a follow up of the initial discussions in this regard held between the Senior Adviser, MACN-India and the Chief Executive Officer of APSEZ and two of his senior colleagues during the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS)-2023 held at Mumbai.

The Senior Adviser, MACN-India was invited by Inchcape to record his address as Special Guest during the Global Compliance Week-2023 of Inchcape scheduled to be held between 13-18th November 2023 across all their offices worldwide. In this light, the Senior Adviser, MACN-India had visited the office of Inchcape in Mumbai. His Special Guest address was duly then recorded there, in which he emphasised the criticality and systemic & sustainable benefits of observing compliance. He also spoke about the profile and work of MACN in India

The MACN-India Team had an interaction, on a virtual mode, with the Deputy Commissioners of Maritime Affairs for the Republic of the Marshall Islands based at Netherlands and United Kingdom, representing the IRI. This meeting led to discussion on issues and challenges of common interest and concern between the MACN and IRI (the latter is a member of the MACN).

During the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS)-2023 held at Mumbai, Team MACN-India had met Mr. Ennarasu, Regional Coordinator, IAPH (International Association of Ports and Harbours). During this interaction that took place at the MACN stall, issues of common interest and potential collaboration between MACN-India and IAPH were discussed. It was agreed upon that these deliberation would be carried forward for identifying areas of synergy and coordination between these two organisations for their mutual benefit.

The MACN-India Team had actively taken part in the Global Maritime India Summit (GMIS)-2023 held at Mumbai. The former had participated in this event as part of the Denmark pavilion arranged by the Embassy of Denmark to India. The GMIS-2023 was a mega program organised by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India. The MACN-India presence in this event, which included a maritime industry anti-corruption pledge taking, was well attended and received.

The Senior Adviser (India) to the MACN was invited to address, as Guest of Honour, the conference organised by INMEX-SMM-Messe Hamburg India at Mumbai. He was invited to speak tto he audience about the MACN. The Maritime Expert and Helpdesk In-Charge of MACN-India was also present in this conference. The latter event was part of the conference-cum-expo format of this 3 days program.

The MACN-India had organised two separate workshops for the relevant sections of the Indian maritime industry at Mumbai. These were pertaining to the roll-out by the MACN of the new e-learning module on ‘Next Generation of Seafarers‘ (cadets and trainees), as well as on the MACN’s 3Sea Diligence platform. Both these service offerings of the MACN were unveiled in these meetings, which were attended by 30 members of the Indian maritime industry.

The MACN had organised an India Showcasing Event at Mumbai. The entire gamut of activities and outcomes of the work of MACN-India since its inception in the country effective from 27th July 2022 and till date was presented in this program. This event was attended by around 200 guests comprising senior functionaries of the Government of India, private sector, diplomatic corps (including the Ambassadors of Denmark and Panama to India), maritime training institutions and media. This program, one of the highlights of which was an articulation, first-hand, by four senior serving masters of vessels of different companies, was very well received.

The proposal of MACN-India on anti-corruption measures in the supply chain framework has been incorporated in the context of a stable and resilient supply chain network in the recommendations of the India B20, which will be submitted for consideration to the India G20 in its Summit Meeting scheduled to be held at New Delhi on 8-10th September 2023

The CII is the official Secretariat of the Indian B20, ongoing currently. These discussions pertained to the proposals submitted by the MACN-India to the Indian B20 Secretariat for incorporating in the recommendations of the Indian B20 adoption of anti-corruption measures in the supply-chain network, for onwards submission by the Indian B20 to the Indian G20 Summit Meeting

The Senior Adviser (India) had personally met and interacted with the Commodore Superintendent and Deputy Executive Secretary of the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) about the MACN and its activities in India. The former had then extended an invitation from the MACN to the SCC to consider putting of an information stall of the SCC at the MACN’s India Curtain Raiser Event to be held at Mumbai on 26th September 2023 (AN) as well as to attend as an Observer the Fall- 2023 Members Meeting of the MACN scheduled to take place at Mumbai on 27-28th September 2023

Amit Wasan, India representative of Milaha (Shipping), Doha, Qatar, discussed with the Senior Adviser (India) to the MACN about the possibility of the company joining in as a member of the MACN and the pathway, going ahead. The Senior Adviser explained the modalities for the purpose, as a follow up to his earlier mail dated 10th May 2023 to the former. Previously, the MACN-India Team had made a presentation to and interacted with the said India representative of Milaha, inter-alia, on 24th February 2023

The Senior Adviser (Mr. Deepak Shetty) has attended the 4th meeting of the Indian B20 Action Council on ESG in Business and reiterated MACN’s formulation and suggestion for incorporating an anti-corruption element in this Action Council’s recommendation for a more robust, resilient and sustainable supply chain architecture, for submission to and consideration by the G20 Summit Meeting slated to be held at New Delhi in September 2023
